The Fire and Fodder Reversal Phenomenon: Vertebrate Herbivore Activity in Burned and Unburned Tasmanian Ecosystems

چکیده

Very few multi-species or ecosystem comparisons of post-fire vertebrate herbivore activity and food preference exist to inform fire management conservation strategies. We inferred (1–3 years) native introduced attraction six diverse temperate vegetation communities (grassland rainforest) from scat counts. hypothesised that where reduced herbaceous grassy (‘fodder’), herbivores would decline, preferences versus exotic differ significantly. Instead, we found evidence for a ‘fire fodder reversal phenomenon’ whereby macropod deer scats were more abundant after in consistently ‘fodder-poor’ types (e.g., heath) but less previously fodder-rich grassland). Fodder cover predicted macropod, wombat, bare ground was strongly associated with only, the latter indicating competition sources due their abundance high-altitude open ecosystems. We, therefore, environmental predictors each individual species/group suggest broadscale multi-environment, multispecies observations be informative potentially overlapping niches.

Fire and grazing in a mesic tallgrass prairie: impacts on plant species and functional traits.

Fire is a globally distributed disturbance that impacts terrestrial ecosystems and has been proposed to be a global "herbivore." Fire, like herbivory, is a top-down driver that converts organic materials into inorganic products, alters community structure, and acts as an evolutionary agent. Though grazing and fire may have some comparable effects in grasslands, they do not have similar impacts ...

The Late Permian herbivore Suminia and the early evolution of arboreality in terrestrial vertebrate ecosystems.

Vertebrates have repeatedly filled and partitioned the terrestrial ecosystem, and have been able to occupy new, previously unexplored habitats throughout their history on land. The arboreal ecospace is particularly important in vertebrate evolution because it provides new food resources and protection from large ground-dwelling predators. We investigated the skeletal anatomy of the Late Permian...

The Tasmanian Legacy of Man and Fire

The vegetation of Tasmania is complex and much of it is in a state of disclimax. At the time of European settlement, the proportion of non-forest open vegetation was 370/0, about 5% ofthis at high altitudes. In the present interglacial climate, in regions ofhigh rainfall, where rainforest dominance might be expected, approximately 45% carries sedgeland, grassland, shrub communities and wet scle...
